The Sixth Foreign Town

Olev Subbi The Sixth Foreign Town 2005 acrylic, oil, masonite 60 × 80 cm

Subbi made a whole series of paintings of foreign towns. As the title suggests, he did not paint specific cities but generalised places that revealed clearly sensed foreignness, meaning that the motifs used were not domestic and not typical of Estonia. Subbi repeatedly travelled to Italy and Spain so the series of foreign towns is obviously based on the southern urban landscapes of these two countries. There are faded white walls and arches, some metaphysical openings and strange towers against the backdrop of a yearning blue shade.
