Listening to the Murmur of the Sea
Modelled 1904 / porcelain 1905
Biscuit porcelain
82.5 × 38 × 34 cm
The work was created in 1904 in the biscuit technique. Versions of the sculpture are preserved in the Art Museum of Estonia, Tartu Art Museum and State Russian Museum in St. Petersburg. It is one of many sea-themed works in Adamson’s oeuvre. Adamson was born in a sailor’s family near Paldiski, which is why the sea constituted an important theme for him in sculpture as well as painting. His fascination by the dramatic side of the sea may have been incited by the alleged perishing of his father at sea.
