This is Olev Subbi’s next to last painting, and it exudes both liberation and yearning. The intersecting perspectives lead into the distance, while the blue sea and homey birch trees represent memory fragments from Subbi’s childhood, eighty years back. Despite the increased distance, Subbi was sad or even melancholy while painting this work, but opened up the space by introducing light and airiness. This work of art is not Subbi’s farewell to the world but looks forward to new horizons.
