Tartu Stone Bridge
Tartu Stone Bridge
1920s–1930s
Oil on canvas
42 × 53 cm
Not much of Eduard Kutsar’s early oeuvre has survived, because in August 1944 there was a fire in his studio, destroying the works in it, too. The farmhouse where he had taken some of his works to safety also caught fire. This intimate and heartfelt view of Tartu is therefore one of the few examples of the early oeuvre of the restless soul. The motif itself is definitely significant for Kutsar, yet he has depicted the bridge from an angle that has enabled him to use a multitude of colours, which is also true of the depiction of the ground.
