Norwegian Landscape

Konrad Mägi Norwegian Landscape 1908–1910 Pastel on paper 38.6 × 45.7 cm

One of the few surviving pastels by Konrad Mägi belonged to the Vesanto family in Finland; they were his friends and patrons. He made other paintings in Norway in winter, but as far as we know never in Estonia. Since Mägi was mainly interested in colours, this lack of interest in winter scenes might be explained by the dearth of colours then.

In Norway, the reason for working in winter might have been his financial situation: this is shown by the fact that the painting was sent to the Vesantos, who sold his works in Finland. In general, Mägi worked in nature at that time, where at least the first versions of his works were made, but it is not known if he used the same approach during winter.
