This work is from the last period of Elmar Kits’s oeuvre. Kits had started working in an abstractionistic key in the latter half of the 1960s, yet he nevertheless for the most part remained true to depicting a more or less recognisable topic, character or situation without becoming altogether abstract. Muusika [Music] also continues a similar trajectory, drawing inspiration from the subject matter of music that runs through Kits’s entire oeuvre. These two genres are often compared to one another, and parallels have been seen – Elmar Kits was also very well informed in the field of music, and tunes that he listened to while painting might have affected his solutions regarding form, his use of colour, etc.
