Asters

Kristjan Teder Asters 1953 Oil on cardboard 49.8 × 60.5 cm

Kristjan Teder’s paintings of flowers testify to the artist’s love of nature. The flowers in his pictures never blend in with the backdrop, and the artist tends to emphasise their exceptionality and lushness. In this picture we can see how the blossoms stand out: the powerful colours chosen by the artist turn each and every blossom into a celebration, instead of conflations and harmony Teder is looking for effect and glamour. The laconic and minimalistic backdrop further emphasises the bright colourfulness of the flowers. Teder has also used alternative brushwork solutions within the picture: the dithering shadow of the vase, for example, does not comply with the concreteness of brushstrokes elsewhere in the painting.
